Across U.S. colleges and universities, students are suffering from disproportionately high rates of anxiety, according to mental health experts.
“College life may be more stressful than ever,” says Dr. Anthony Rostain, professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, who was also the chair of the school’s Task Force on Student Psychological Health and Welfare, as reported by NPR.
Though many students are learning how to manage their mental health at home, sometimes they are not following through with their treatments in school, he explains, which leads them to high stress levels when they are alone.
Rostain says a combination of stressors have led to students suffering more mental health issues, including the availability of bad news all the time on the internet, the pressure of having to excel in everything and not fail in school, and the financial burdens that come with higher education. Additionally, he says, moving on to college and being on your own is something that a lot of students are not prepared for.
