If sea levels continue to rise at the same rate due to greenhouse gas emissions, up to 13 million people in the US could be affected by displacement. New research by Nature Climate Change suggests that if rising seat levels increase by 3 feet – the conservative end of rising sea level estimates – at least 4.2 million people in the US alone will be affected.
Researches were able to pinpoint Florida and the Southeastern US as the primary locations where populations will be affected, about 50% and 20% respectively. Estimates show that the total cost of aiding displaced families will be up to $14 trillion. While rising sea-levels expert Benjamin Strauus maintains that the predictions might be overestimating displacement, it nevertheless brings to question if previous analysis of rising sea-levels have been undermining global effects of climate change.
