A new report from researchers at the Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research reported that though most parts of the Amazon continues to protect the environment by absorbing CO2, other parts that are deforested are “emitting more CO2 than it absorbs.”
The decade-long study has been monitoring CO2 levels in the Amazon for a decade.
“We observed that this area in the south-east is an important source of carbon. And it doesn’t matter whether it is a wet year or a dry year. 2017-18 was a wet year, but it didn’t make any difference,” said lead researcher Prof Luciana Gatti.
Other researchers believe that the findings could mean that more than half of the Amazon will become a savanna in the next three decades.
