New legislation in California will help transgender individuals get their college transcripts updated to reflect their new name, if they have one.
The legislation called Affirming Transgender and Nonbinary Student’s Names in College came about when transgender individuals in the LGBT community raised concerns over hardships that came with trying to apply for a job after college.
“A diploma with a wrong name can have the effect of outing someone who doesn’t wish to be outed in a workplace or another environment where they may feel unsafe coming out,” said Assemblyman David Chiu, a Democrat from San Francisco, who introduced the legislation, as reported by NBC.
There are currently no rules in place for how universities and colleges should update official transcripts for alumni.
The bill has gained support from all sides, being praised for its common sense approach to respecting LGBT and helping to boost their confidence and sense of self.
