Applications to MBA programs in the US were down by nearly 10 percent for the 2019 – 2020 year, and international applications alone fell by more than 13 percent.
The drop in international applicants has been particularly hard for MBA programs, as the majority of their classes are made up of international students. New travel bans and policies on immigrants in the U.S. has made obtaining an education in the country less desirable to students all around the world.
In an effort to attract as many applicants as possible and to remain relevant, MBA programs are seeking the US Department of Homeland Security’s seal of approval to be classified as STEM programs, reports QZ.
STEM programs currently allow students to remain in the country for an additional three years, while students in non-STEM programs have to leave a year after completing their programs.
