On the heels of growing tensions between China and the US, lawmakers and other national leaders are urging the many universities that host Confucius Institutes to shut down the institutes that offer Chinese language and culture programs.
As concerns over espionage grow in the US, some leaders are worried that the institutions pose threats to the safety of the country and are concerned about the overreach of Chinese officials to censor Chinese students who study in America.
The institutes are said to not cover matter on politics and other matters that are sensitive topics in China.
Bloomberg reports that there are 80 Confucius Institutes on US campuses, some of which have already been shut down, and many of which university leaders are defending.
