The Trump administration wants to boost the number of US military ROTC programs that are on Historically Black College and University campuses.
The ROTC – Reserve Officers’ Training Corps – trains students to be soldiers in the U.S. army.
Last week, the administration pitched the vision to expand programs at HBCUs in an effort to prepare more students at those campuses to be in the US army and to make recruiting efforts among those groups easier.
“There is no greater talent development engine in the world than the U.S. military,” said Jonathan Holified, the executive director of the White House initiative, as reported by US News.
“HBCUs are a powerful resource for our nation in terms of educating young African Americans and giving them the tools to help our country compete globally,” said Marshall Williams, principal deputy assistant secretary of Manpower and Reserve Affairs for the Department of the Army, as reported by US News.
Administration officials said the effort will help improve diversity in the army so that young Americans of color have people to look up to in the army.
Currently, 25 of 102 HBCUs have ROTC programs on campus.
