A new study by researchers at the Reading & Literacy Discovery Center of Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital was able to produce brain images with evidence that reading has benefits and screen-time has detrimental effects on a child during the formative years of 3 to 5 years-old.
Images show the brain development of white matter in a child who is often read to, versus the underdevelopment of white matter in the brain of a child who spends a lot of time in front of a screen.
“Kids who have more stimulating experiences that organize the brain are at a huge advantage when they get to school,” said lead author Dr. John Hutton.
“And it’s really harder and harder for kids to catch up if they arrive behind.”
For the study, 47 children between the ages of 3 and 5 were examined by researchers and children were also given cognitive tests.
