California’s earthquake app, created at UC Berkeley for the purpose of keeping everyone in the loop about earthquakes, sent out its first alert this month, which was received by 40 people.
Called “MyShake”, the app gathers info from the US Geological Survey’s shakealert system.
The app can send out alerts that reach people seconds before the actual shaking starts happening, which, LA Times reports, lends enough time for important things like “dentists to remove drills from mouths, elevators to let passengers off and allow people to drop, cover and hold on before strong shaking hits.”
