Mental health can be severely and heavily impacted by the environment.
Countless studies have shown links between good mental health and green, natural spaces, and on the opposite end, links between poor health, depression, anxiety and even suicide among people who live in highly polluted places with little access to nature.
A UN report outlines the significance of city and state leaders in investing in the improvement of their environments by implementing more public parks and green spaces to help approach mental health from that angle.
Your environment influences how you feel about yourself and your life, but it also has a physical impact, with air pollution in particular causing problems to the heart and lungs.
“Up until recently, the role that a healthy environment plays in safeguarding human health had been greatly neglected, but this is changing,” writes UN Environment Org.
“Little by little, both citizens and government are realizing that by helping nature we also improve our well-being.”
