The University of California Los Angeles is officially launching its research institute on kindness, to unveil how the trait drives health.
The institute will explore “how and why being nice to others reduces depression and risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
Previous research by the university has already shown a link between kindness and how it can positively alter gene behaviour, turning down genes that lead to health problems, and increasing the activity of those that promote wellness by protecting against infections.
The UCLA Bedari Kindness Institute will focus on developing material to teach people to be kind through various platforms, in classrooms, and online programs. LA Times reports that the main objective of the institute beyond developing research on the trait will be to promote kindness all around.
