Ethnic studies could be mandatory in California for both high school students and for Cal State Universities if lawmakers manage to get enough people on board.
Many teachers and leaders in the education sector believe it is imperative to help them address serious issues that once affected, and continue to affect, the country today.
Though many are on board to make the requirement happen in California, some educators at Cal States are wary of making it a requirement.
“We will not accept a curriculum that fails to address difficult issues in a way that promotes open-mindedness and independent thought — skills our students need to understand vital societal and civic forces,” said Linda Darling-Hammond, president of the state Board of Education, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
Requiring ethnic studies would essentially prepare Californian students for developing a better understanding of the world around them and curriculum would be required to reflect this in public K-12 schools.
