Across the country, some schools are starting to provide free menstrual products for girls since inadequate access to them can often pose barriers to students and their education.
Some states have even started considering removing taxes on menstrual products since they are a necessity and because the products can be so expensive and hard to afford for low-income students.
In many cases, low-income students find themselves staying at home because they didn’t purchase tampons or pads, or simply opting out of classes and activities because they can’t really participate during their periods.
A movement to “end period poverty” has helped to raise some awareness around the issue, but across the country the issue of girls and women not being able to afford feminine products is still too prevalent.
