Last week the California Board of Education approved new framework for sex education in California schools.
The guidelines are in line with the California Healthy Youth Act and are considered to be important guidelines for districts and schools when they are shaping new curriculum.
Though the guidelines consist of other recommendations for teaching various subjects, sex education makes up only about 10 percent of the guidelines, yet resulted in the most controversy among lawmakers, according to Ed Source.
Such guidelines have not been updated since 1994.
Currently, sex education is not required to be taught before 7th grade and the law only mandates that youth be taught sex education once in middle school and once in high school, according to Ed Source. In some cases, parents can still choose to remove their children from learning sex education in school.
