A new study published in the journal Nature Chemistry reported the potential for a new, 100 percent recyclable plastic that would help mitigate, and maybe end, the mass production of plastics that otherwise never degrade in the environment.
Researchers at Berkeley Lab discovered a new way to assemble plastic molecules so that they can be recycled, reused, and transformed again into any shape or form.
According to the abstract, the plastic bonds can essentially break down with an acid bath.
“The ease with which poly(diketoenamine)s can be manufactured, used, recycled and re-used—without losing value—points to new directions in designing sustainable polymers with minimal environmental impact,” said lead researcher Peter Christensen.
Plastic waste is currently one of the world’s greatest challenges, creating negative impact in the environment and even impacting the wellness of wildlife and humans.
