A medical school in Texas, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, will no longer consider race in its admissions process after a new agreement with the U.S. Department of Education.
The university was asked by the administration to stop using affirmative action, according to WSJ, and could hint at how the administration will handle race issues at other universities and institutions in the future.
While Supreme Court officials have ruled in favor of affirmative action time and again, the increasing focus by the administration to remove affirmative action from the admissions process at universities across the U.S. could lead schools to begin removing the practice and implementing “race-neutral alternatives” to improve diversity.
Those alternatives are yet to be outlined.
