According to data from the National Health Expenditure, Americans spend billions more on prescription drugs today than 10 years ago. In 2017, Americans spent more than $333 billion on prescription drugs, and researchers say this is due to a dramatic increase in prices.
In many cases, important prescription drugs such as those that are essential for people living with severe chronic diseases, have nearly tripled in the last couple of years. Researchers have pointed to the fact that people have even stopped taking their medications because they cannot afford them.
Data indicates that the biggest spikes in pricing for prescription drugs happened for drugs that have been around for a long time, yet new prescription drugs have the highest ticket price and make up the majority of the $333 billion being spent on drugs in the U.S. There is no sign that these prices will be capped any time soon, according to researchers, because they are not monitored by the government.
