Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History will be moving forward with its expansion project after receiving its $160 million donation earlier this year. The museum’s galleries will be closed beginning in 2020, while other facilities remain open to the public and for students.
The funds will be used to expand its exhibition space, classrooms, research and collection storage space and the museum is also seeking input from students and faculty to decide on where to invest the funds, which are part of the largest single donation ever given to a U.S. Natural History Museum.
A very small portion of the museum’s collection is currently on display and the museum, but the expansion will support the display of more artifacts.
