The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is considering adhering to a request from a religious group seeking to be treated as an ethnicity in schools.
Representatives from the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund discussed with the Department of Education to propose treating the religion as an ethnicity as well. This would help ensure that students are not discriminated against in cases where religious discrimination is not protected against.
The Office for Civil Rights received more than 100 complaints related to discrimination in schools involving religion between 2009 and 2018.
Earlier this year the Department of Education made moves to embrace Judaism in schools as an ethnicity in addition to being a religion.
