The Florida Board of Education approved an increase in budget funding for public schools and colleges.
The board is seeking $21.4 billion, the majority of which will be received from local property taxes.
Due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma, education leaders found it imperative to pass the proposal in order to help students recover from the storm.
The changes, which will be implemented during the 2018-2019 school year, will allow students to receive scholarships, grants, and other funding.
A new “schools of hope” program will also use funds to help students in low-performing public schools.
