The California State Board of Education recently proposed a set of criteria that aims to keep “ineffective” teachers from classrooms.
The proposal will monitor teachers who do not have full credentials and will not be based on their students’ class performances.
While many support the limitation of inadequate teachers in classrooms, some are concerned the new measure will overlook those who are qualified yet ineffective.
In a letter from the Education Trust–West, a nonprofit based in Oakland, education officials are apprehensive the changes will help students and schools.
The statement condemns the Board’s criteria for failing “to consider teacher effectiveness as something apart from certification and instead as something related to performance and impact on students.”
