A recent study by New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development examined the vital relationship between a father’s parenting beliefs and his relationships with his children.
Researchers found that a father’s income and education levels are determinants in the role he plays within his children’s lives.
“Separating education and income as two aspects of father resources, which are often combined into a single measure of socioeconomic status, revealed differential associations with father investment of time and finances,” explained assistant professor of applied psychology and the study’s lead author Tamarie Macon.
Overall, more educated fathers were more likely to participate in care-giving but lacked to participate in social activities.
“Our results reaffirm the importance of designing parenting interventions that consider fathers’ beliefs and values, not solely their parenting knowledge and skills,” said Macon.
