With California joining the list of only nine states that include LGBTQ sexuality within history and health classes, educators are concerned minimal educational material is reaching students.
In a survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign, while 20 percent of millennials identify as LGBTQ, only 12 percent of teenagers received education regarding same sex relationships.
As a result, sexual education within the majority of US schools focuses solely on heterosexual relationships, which can further alienate LGBTQ individuals from their peers.
Advocates of increasing safe-sex education in schools point to statistics that illustrate LGBTQ individuals face high rates of sexually transmitted diseases.
Overall, 22 percent of transgender women are HIV positive and queer men are more likely to contract a sexually transmitted disease compared to other individuals.
