A new study presented at the 2017 conference for the American Thoracic Society (ATS) found that exposure to air pollution can negatively impact sleep.
Long-term exposure to pollution in the air can irritate airways and cause swelling and congestion, which in turn impacts sleep quality, explained Dr. Martha E. Billings, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Washington.
While prior studies have found that pollution affects human health in terms of cardiovascular health, this study focused on pollution’s impact on sleep patterns.
The study examined over 1,500 participants and used data on air pollution from many locations in major cities across the U.S.
