World Bank President Jim Young Kim announced this week that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates will donate $100 million to a World Bank fund for women entrepreneurs, as part of the larger $1 billion women’s empowerment fund led by World Bank.
The project was proposed and supported by Ivanka Trump, although World Bank is allegedly leading the project on its own.
Yousef Al Otaiba of the UAE announced that the donation is a “commitment to empowering women in [UAE] region,” he said, “where women play a role in every segment of society.”
While donations from other countries for a ‘reputable international organization’ like World Bank are acceptable, “the donations need to be strictly vetted and must be transparent,” says Norm Eisen, former ethics official for the Obama administration.
As long as Trump does not solicit donations and World Bank leads the project, the donations should be fine, explains Eisen.
“The donation raised some eyebrows, since candidate Trump regularly excoriated the Clinton Foundation for accepting donations from repressive Middle East regimes such as Saudi Arabia,” reported NPR.
