Recent data has shown that the rates of sexually transmitted diseases among teens in Niagara Falls, New York, are higher than the statewide average, and the teen pregnancy rates are three times higher within poor neighborhoods.
The Niagara Falls Youth City Council, a 10-member group, recently addressed the Board of Education and requested for better sex education in Niagara Falls High School.
The state Education Department mandates sex education in schools, but leaves the details to the discretion of local districts.
Ninth grader and Youth City Council member expressed that her friends “not being safe about [sex]. They’re always scared there’s going to be a pregnancy scare or an STD. And they have no one to talk to about it.”
