With the help of government funds and charity donations, a $460 million initiative was recently launched to develop and provide vaccines to contain epidemic outbreaks before they become global hazards.

In light of the slow governmental response rate in helping those affected by the Zika and Ebola, the initiative, called the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), will focus on developing several vaccines for quick distribution in case of an emergency.

“Ebola and Zika showed that the world is tragically unprepared to detect local outbreaks and respond quickly enough to prevent them from becoming global pandemics,” said Bill Gates, who is supporting the initiative, as reported by Yahoo News.

The priority will be to develop two vaccines for each of the highly-contagious viruses – Lassa and Nimpha.
