Alas, the gap in education between white and black students has not closed and instead, may have widened further. According to a report, Rising Tide II: Do Black Students Benefit as Grad Rates Increase?, which examines a decade of graduation rates for 232 four-year public institutions, the graduation rates for black students has declined for numerous institutions.
While 70 percent of the institutions under examination did demonstrate overall improvement in graduation rates for African American students, the majority of them demonstrated spiked growth for white students as well, which in turn has not served to close the gap for minorities. In fact, 27 of those institutions showed declines or no improvement in graduation rates for black students, which is well enough to concern the productivity of our educational system in the 21st century.
Meanwhile, 52 of the institutions examined showed improvement in graduation rates for black students, while closing the gap within their individual institutions.
