Stepping up efforts to fix its growing homelessness problem, the San Jose City Council on Tuesday discussed creating a “tent city” to provide winter housing for some of the 4,000 homeless individuals living in the city, reports the Mercury News.
Tent cities, effectively city-sanctioned encampments, are being utilized in a few other West Coast regions, like Seattle and Santa Clara County. In San Jose, the proposal has been met with some skepticism due to the potential risks, but elected officials supporting the proposal believe that other solutions, like converting hotels into temporary housing, are not effective enough to address the size and urgency of their crisis.
