Hunger Report 2016 Highlights Connection Between Hunger and Global Health Care

The Bread for the World Institute just released its much awaited World Hunger Report for 2016, which, this year, focuses on the connection between hunger and global public health. The report’s leading message states, “Nutritious food is essential to healthy growth and development and can prevent the need for costly medical care. Many chronic diseases—the main drivers of cost growth and poor population health—are diet-related.

A clear and concise lesson—hunger cannot be solved only by food, but by nutritious food. The global hunger rate is at its lowest level in recorded human history; however, malnutrition in the form of obesity and vitamin and mineral deficiencies remain a hardship for health care systems in developing countries. These nations are not alone; the United States continues to suffer high costs of health care as the result of high levels of poverty and hunger.
