The nonprofit therapy center “Abilities United” is taking a new approach to therapy for developmentally disabled adults, one that emphasizes personal responsibility in ordinary tasks. As the nonprofit’s manager attests, organizing activities that build a sense of personal value in developmentally disabled adults benefits them more than aimless recreational activities.
On one purpose-driven outing, community training instructor Loren Resuello brought a group to shred important documents at a senior home, an activity that develops motor skills and attentiveness as well as a sense of social purpose. Since foregrounding this approach, Abilities United has seen a significant increase in demand for their programs.
