Although race was once the marker of educational inequality, the new divider that separates over and under-achieving children in schools is class, reports the New York Times. The gap between affluent and low-income children is the widest it has ever been, says Sean Reardon, an educational policy analyst at Stanford. New research shows that even the smartest children from low-income backgrounds fall behind their affluent peers during the progression of their schooling– those who do succeed face challenges that only grow more difficult at higher levels of education.
