The Academy of American Poets received a $4.5 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which reportedly is the largest single grant the organization has acquired.
“Despite the recognition and esteem received from their communities, state and city poets laureate often do not receive resources commensurate with their creative output and public service. I hope that Mellon’s support will remind us of the power of language and human exchange that poetry uniquely offers,” said President of the Mellon Foundation, Elizabeth Alexander, as reported by Broadway World.
The grant will help to fund the organization’s fellowship program for the next couple of years, which supports artists, poets in their endeavours to support their communities in the arts.
