The number of Americans donating to charities is decreasing and has been for the last couple of years. There are a number of reasons for this.
First, a 2017 tax law reduced the number of Americans who have access to charitable deductions, making is less likely for Americans to donate if they are hoping for tax deductions.
Next, more organizations are being careful about who they accept donations from. For example, there have been many instances in which organizations have refused a donation because of the donor’s affiliation with a controversial or morally questionable matter.
Experts estimate that since the new tax law, charities missed out on $20 billion in donations each year.
