California is still struggling to handle the growing number of individuals facing homelessness in the state. In Los Angeles alone, there are more than 60,000 people living on the streets, in encampments under freeways and in parking lots and public spaces.
Recently the Supreme Court once again re-established that homeless individuals should not be reprimanded for sleeping in public spaces, especially since they have nowhere to go and cities can’t keep up with the demand for shelters and housing units.
LA Times reports that for Los Angeles, this is a big deal because the city’s involvement has been minimized. Cities have fewer policing powers when it comes to homeless individuals who have nowhere to go other than public spaces because shelters are too full.
