The New Britain Museum of American Art will be dedicating the year to exhibits created solely by female artists.
The year will mark the century anniversary since the 19th amendment gave women the right to vote.
“We use 20 as a watermark on our plan to include more women artists, but collectively, by the time we take into account the number of artists, by the time the year is over, it’ll be closer to 200,” says Min Jung Kim, director & CEO of NBMAA, as reported by Hartford Magazine.
Data on the state of museums and galleries across the country has shown over the years that the majority of newly acquired art, and the majority of collections exclude works by women. More museums and galleries are now focusing on leveling the playing field.
