A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that mind-body exercises help to reduce chronic pain, and ultimately help to reduce the amount of prescription opioid needed by patients.
“Mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy and clinical hypnosis appear to be the most useful for reducing pain,” said lead author of the study, Eric Garland. The study reviewed 60 other studies than involved more than 6400 patients.
Though the impact of mind-body exercises wasn’t tremendous, researchers say there is evidence that it is a step in the right direction when it comes to reducing medications.
Finding new ways to reduce medications is also important as a survey in recent years found that the majority of American prefer trying other methods to deal with physical pain than using medication.
