According to new research from the Williams Institute at UCLA, 1 in 5 LGBTQ Americans live in poverty — a relatively higher rate compared to other Americans.
Researchers looked at data from a survey of 2014 to 2017 which included 35 states.
Among LGBT, transgender people are the most likely to live in poverty, at about 29 percent rate.
“Once factors such as race, age, location, education, disability, language marital status, employment, health, and children are taken into account, we find that LGBT people are still more likely to experience poverty than their cisgender straight counterparts,” according to the report.
People of color are also more likely to be living in poverty than their white counterparts, according to the research.
