Children in the foster care system often have a hard time accessing much-needed extracurriculars when the cost of participating is impossible for them and their families to cover and when the logistics of participating get in the way.
There are often costs for being a part of a team or group, for uniforms, and for transportation.
That’s why California lawmakers are hoping to establish a pilot program that would give foster families small grants to help them cover costs for foster children to participate in extracurriculars.
“Many of the day-to-day activities that numerous children take for granted are inaccessible to children in foster care. Whether it is sports, music, art or just being part of an extracurricular club — these types of activities are mostly out of reach,” said State Sen. Scott Wilk (R), author of the bill, as reported by the Chronicle for Social Change.
If approved, the pilot program would help foster families with $1,000 grants that foster children can put toward their extracurriculars.
