A new study published in the journal Nature Communications found that a phenomenon in the ocean is improving the Great Barrier Reef by causing coral to spawn multiple times a year.
Researchers from the University of Queensland and CSIRO said that the multiple spawning phases per year increase chances for corals to find a new home reef.
“This means that split spawning can increase the recovery potential for reefs in the region,” said researchers.
Despite this improvement, however, scientists still warn that there need to be improvements on protecting the ocean and its coral reefs in order to ensure that they will even be around to continue spawning and ensuring their future.
