Mosquitos in Southeast Asia, from Cambodia to Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, are carrying a strain of malaria that is resistant to two key anti-malaria medicines, according to researchers.
“This highly successful resistant parasite strain is capable of invading new territories and acquiring new genetic properties,” said Olivo Miotto, co-author of the study.
In 2017 alone more than 220 million people were infected with the virus, according to the World Health Organization, of which 400,000 died. Researchers are concerned that if resistance to anti-malaria drugs continues to grow, more people could be at risk, especially in Africa, where the majority of deaths by malaria occurred.
