Museums and galleries are rethinking the use of the term “Latin American artist” to describe those who come from the region, but who might not necessarily make art that resonates with what has traditionally been identified as “Latin American” art.
Today, experts say, lumping artists from the region under the umbrella term is a bit of an outdated approach because it does not necessarily give each artist hers and his own voice and instead might actually work against them.
“From a branding point of view, I feel that saying ‘Latin American Art’ comes with a certain amount of baggage,” says Alexandra Morris of the New York-based gallery Proxyco, as reported by The Art Newspaper.
Galleries are now bringing more awareness to how they label artists that they feature.
