According to a new report from the American Heart Association published last week, smoking tobacco from a hookah is no less harmful than smoking from a cigarette, with the immediate effects usually being equally or more detrimental.
Smoking from a water pipe (hookah) has been linked to effects on the heart rate, blood pressure and vascular function, among other things, according to the report.
The report, published in the AHA journal Circulation, found that within a 30-minute session of smoking hookah, users will end up inhaling more hazardous matter than if smoking a cigarette. They are also exposed to higher ratios of hazardous toxins, such as particulate matter, lead, cadmium and arsenic, among others.
In the U.S., the majority of those who smoke hookah are younger, between the ages of 18 to 24, according to the report.
