According to a new study published in the journal Current Biology, using up your weekends to catch up on sleep that didn’t happen during the week can ultimately be detrimental to your health.
The study from researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder found that those who were using weekends as remedies for sleep were actually gaining more weight and showed “declines in insulin sensitivity.”
For the study, researchers examined 36 adults on different sleep schedules and monitored their sleep, exposure to light and food intake.
Ultimately those who were getting less sleep at night were snacking more and gaining weight, and even if they were catching up on sleep during the weekend, their health was actually more a jeopardy than those who consistently slept few hours throughout the entire week and weekend.
