According to the Art Museum Staff Demographic Survey produced by the Andrew Mellon Foundation, there have been slight increases in the number of women and people of color who serve on museum staff. The survey reflects data on more than 332 art museums and 30,000 employees.
Between 2015 and 2018 for example, the percentage of women in leadership roles increased from 57 percent to 62 percent. Women still make up the majority of museum staff, but they are not the majority of leadership roles.
Meanwhile, the percentage of POC who held leadership roles in museums rose from 11 percent to only 12 percent.
Though the changes have been small, leaders of the Mellon Foundation noted that these changes are overdue and perhaps hinting at the future of the museum leadership. Researchers identified that the biggest changes in hiring more women and people of color are happening in the curatorial department and in education.
