A new study published in Current Directions in Psychological Science found that drawing is one of the best devices for memorizing things.
Art net reports that the action of drawing requires the use of multiple skills, while other mnemonic devices, such as taking photos or writing only focuses on one skill. The study was conducted by researchers at Ontario’s University of Waterloo, where 24 seniors and 24 undergraduates were tested on their memory skills based on writing and drawing particular things.
All subjects were able to remember the material better when it was drawn out, rather than written, at a ratio of 2:1.
Previous research has shown that drawing can help patients who are living with dementia with memory retention, Art Net reports.
