California has some of the nation’s most strict gun laws in the country, with several laws implemented to help improve gun control over the years.
The age limit for buying a gun, for example, is 21, compared to 18 in most other places. Those who can no longer purchase guns include people convicted of domestic violence and those hospitalized for mental illness more than once within a year.
Other regulations that have been in tact for a longer period of time include licensing for selling firearms, requiring a written test to get a Firearm Safety Certificate, and allowing for a temporary gun violence restraining order if requested by family members or police. California can issue permits for the possession of assault rifles to certain law enforcement agencies or other approved individuals, but the sale, transfer, possession and manufacture of assault weapons is prohibited.
