A new report from the Department of Justice’s Office of Inspector General found that the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ management of female inmates has been negligent of inmates’ basic needs.
Leaders of the National Prisons Project said that the Bureau is doing the minimal amount of work to keep inmates safe and healthy, and it’s been noted that the largest prison system in the U.S. has been transferring female inmates to institutions where they are at the hands of male correctional officers, experiencing sexual abuse.
The report dissected information collected over the course of a year from inmates and staff members at several prisons across the country and concluded that three key areas of health that require more attention at prisons with female inmates include trauma treatment, pregnancy and hygiene.
