Large influential companies like Starbucks and McDonalds are beginning the switch to ditch plastic straws, after legislation moves across the U.S. to eliminate to use of plastic straws altogether.
Concern sparked over the years over the use of plastic straws as marine life has been shown to be affected by straws that end up in the nostrils, skins and stomachs of fish and wildlife.
Starbucks announced that it will be ditching plastic straws by 2020 and using paper straws or cups that don’t require straws. Meanwhile McDonalds will be using paper straws only in Ireland and in the UK.
Plastic straws make up about 2,000 tons of the 9 million tons of new plastic waste in the world’s oceans every year.
In total, plastic straws make up 4 percent plastic trash.
