In Los Angeles, thousands of children are living in poor health, suffering from preventable diseases that are “common in third world countries,” say health experts.
They are suffering from traumatic life experiences, many children from South America who have immigrated to the U.S., many of whom have lost their parents to drugs, deportation and violence.
A new report from the California Budget and Policy Center indicated that more than 20 percent of children living in California live with families that “can’t afford basic necessities.”
Major nonprofits that serve low-income families in Los Angeles report seeing children every week who are affected by food insecurity, no access to housing, and trauma in their lives.
California has the world’s 5th largest economy, according to the Los Angeles Times, and yet extreme poverty affects thousands of children living there every day.
